TAXI, BUS, and SUBWAY FARES
Taxis, buses, and subways run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you can't walk to your destination, these are the next-best ways to get around.
TAXIS
Grabbing a cab can be ideal when tired feet, heavy luggage or shopping bags weigh you down. Here's what you should know about the City's fleet of taxi cabs.
Tip: Hail taxis whose numbers are illuminated on top—they're on duty.
Payment: All taxis accept cash and most accept credit cards.
Cost: Minimum metered fare is $2.50, which increases 50 cents every fifth of a mile or every minute, depending on how fast you're traveling.
• There is a New York State tax surcharge of 50 cents per ride.
• An additional $1 surcharge is added to the meter Monday–Friday, 4–8pm, and a 50-cent surcharge is added at night, 8pm–6am.
• Taxis do not charge per person, however they can only carry four passengers at a time.
MTA - BUSES and SUBWAYS
The City's rail and bus system is inexpensive and the easiest and quickest way to get across the five boroughs. If you're new to public transit, MTA has an excellent
Trip Planner to help you get around the city.
Tip: Purchase a MetroCard at any subway station. The minimum value is $5.50
Payment: Booth attendants accept cash only. Automated machines accept cash, ATM bank cards and regular credit cards.
Cost: The fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.75. The fare for an express bus ride is $6.50. Don't throw away your MetroCard. The MTA charges a $1.00 "new card fee" for the purchase of a new MetroCard.
TIPPING
Since New Yorkers in the service industries (hotels, restaurants and transportation) usually have tips factored into their wages, tips are expected and greatly appreciated. You don’t have to go overboard, but be sure to show the love for great New York City service.
* Here’s how much you should tip:
* Hotel doorman: $1 for hailing a cab.
* Porters and bellhops: $1–$2 per bag.
* Housekeeping: $1–$2 per day of your visit, or as much as $5 per day.
* Waitstaff: 15–20 percent of total bill.
* Taxi drivers: 15–20 percent of total fare.
We look forward to seeing you at your audition!
