You made it through! There is a light at the end of the tunnel! While you are currently weighing options and deciding where to spend your next glorious four years, it’s important to take time and reflect on how much you’ve grown over the audition season. While it wasn’t easy, you are on the other side of it now and you deserve a pat on the back! Here are a few things you may have learned about yourself that deserve some kudos:
You Are An Audition Pro
Sheet music packed? Check. Audition outfit ironed? Check. Dance clothes and shoes laid out? Check. Snacks and water in your audition bag? Check. You’ve now got this down to an art. This is great preparation for life after college where most of your days will be filled with back-to-back auditions. Learning how to leave one audition behind you to focus on the next can be challenging – however, after roughly 10-15 auditions over the course of a few weekends, you now know you are up for the challenge!
Your Parents/Guardians Rock
If you are lucky to have supportive parents/guardians who carted you from audition location to various hotels and then to more auditions – they deserve a big hug from you. As you know, college auditions are time consuming and your parents took the time off to make sure you got everywhere you needed to be (and most likely, footed the bill.) If you have parents who supported you, never stopped believing in your talent and were there to comfort you through the hard times, you have surely discovered just how much your parents/guardians truly rock after this crazy process.
Rejections? Who Cares!
One thing is for sure: you have developed a thick skin. While you may have dealt with rejection in high school, there is nothing like the rejections that come with college auditions as there can be multiple within a short time frame! Rejection can be good for your character and prepare you for the rest of your performing arts career. As you have probably heard over and over, the reason you were rejected is completely out of your control – so, learning to brush them off is definitely a skill you have acquired this spring!
Be Open Minded
You most likely started this process with a “dream” school in mind. Whether or not you were accepted to this school, I’m sure your priorities and what you thought you wanted have shifted a bit. A great audition with an awesome auditor could have opened your eyes to a school that you didn’t initially have high on your list or alternatively, your dream school could be a let down when you finally made it to campus. This is a general life lesson that will come in handy in a myriad of ways: if you are open to opportunities and not close minded, you are bound to be pleasantly surprised as opposed to devastatingly disappointed.
No matter the outcome of your auditions, you should be extremely proud of how much you’ve grown over the course of this year. No one said this would be easy, but hopefully now you can look back and marvel at all you accomplished. This is certainly a journey you will never forget!
