Avoid these common mistakes in the audition room!

Published February 6th, 2015

Many applicants make mistakes when they audition which are easily avoidable. Here are some thoughts on how to make the best impression in the audition room.

For dance, it's not about the "tricks".  Strong technique beats lack of control.  I'd rather see a clean double pirouette than falling out of a series of longer turns.

Show that you are willing to adapt, learn and grow.  College selection committees are looking for exciting new talent.  Contrary to common thought, your skill set does not have to be completely polished.  They want to know that you're ready to learn. Show that you are a diamond in the rough.

Many applicants don't carefully read the application/audition requirements.  Read, then reread the requirements.

Make sure to coach with professionals who are not just great teachers but who are also currently working in the field. Acceptd's new online coaching service is a great and affordable way to do this.

Be realistic with your performance choices.  Always present material that is age appropriate and easily within your skill set and ability.

At your audition show the auditors what makes "you" uniquely "you". Choose material that shows your inner spirit, your special voice and displays your talents.  The way to stand out is to show your true self.

Always connect with your material.  Technique is important but I would rather see someone who can take me on a journey.  Find the acting beats in your material and make strong choices. The best storytellers are the most successful in the audition room. Tell us your story!

Lastly, many students get nervous in the audition room because they feel intimated by the audition panel.  However it's important to realize that the audition panel is on your side! So be relaxed, have fun and know that we'll be rooting for you!
