A little motivation: Your art is important

Published April 28th, 2014

The life of a performing artist is always busy: auditions, rehearsals, shows, more rehearsals, more auditions. But for the last year or so, you’ve had to deal with the extra stress of a college search. Somewhere in between all the normal activities you do to keep up with your art, you had to find time to visit colleges, apply to them, make audition videos, audition in person, and make a final decision on where you want to go.

At some point throughout all this craziness, you’ve probably had some doubts. Maybe you’ve second-guessed pursuing music, theatre, or dance as a career, or maybe you regretted not applying to more colleges with other options. Either way, that’s totally natural. The life of an artist is a ton of work anyway, and to add the extra stress of finding a college program you like, getting in, and then paying for it can make the entire process really overwhelming.

But remember: it’s totally worth it because your art is important.

Don’t just take our word for it either. Whether you’re a dancer, actor, or a musician, take a break and rest assured that if you’re doing what you love, you can’t go wrong.

If you’re a dancer, Martha Graham reminds you that greatness comes from passion.

If you’re pursuing your dreams in theatre, listen to the fabulous Lupita Nyong’o.

If you’re a musician, remember Leonard Bernstein’s recipe for greatness.

Most importantly, remember that your pursuit of the arts is brave and awesome. And your art is important.
