Training yourself to be Positive

Published February 12th, 2016

For some reason, it’s often easier to focus on the negative aspects of a situation than the positive. I find it’s effortless to truly hear and believe something discouraging as opposed to receive and acknowledge feedback that is affirmative. With being a musician, actor, artist or dancer this comes with the territory – there is a lot of rejection that can beat down on one’s self-esteem. However, positivity is appealing and people tend to want to hire/be friends with/associate with people who ooze positivity. So, how then can one truly stay positive and keep an optimistic outlook when negativity or doubt surrounds us? Well, let’s take a look at a few tricks!

First, it’s helpful to train your brain to take criticism for what it is. Of course, receiving negative feedback can be disheartening – but you should learn to truly dissect the criticism and see what you can take from it as opposed to getting offended. Be honest with yourself: is there any truth to this feedback? Can I learn from it? Spin the negative thoughts that may be running through your head and decide to take this feedback as a positive way to improve yourself or your work. Alternatively, if you truly feel the criticism is unwarranted, choose to breathe and let it go. The person on the giving end may be plagued with negativity themselves and this feedback could have very little to do with you.

Find ways to express gratitude. Thinking positive thoughts is great, but finding a way to actually get this gratitude out into the world is essential. This can be done in a culmination of ways. You can keep a journal full of positive encounters or times you felt especially grateful. Or, make a conscious effort to acknowledge people who you are grateful for by writing them a note or better yet - tell them to their face how much they are appreciated. Talking about or sharing gratitude is an essential way to remind yourself daily to live positively.

I’m sure you have heard this one before, but positive people are usually ones who try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Exercise, eating well and sleep are crucial to a positive lifestyle. There is just something about a brisk walk, run or swim that helps boost one’s mentality. Take a walk in your neighborhood and be grateful for the beautiful place you get to call home. Go hiking with friends and take in the views. Take a long nap and don’t feel guilty about it. Swap out a burger for a salad for a few meals and be proud of yourself. Push yourself to create positive atmospheres if you feel like you are surrounded by negative ones.

Don’t forget to remind yourself how awesome you are. Did you absolutely nail your solo at your recent concert? That deserves a pat on the back! Are you especially proud of the outfit you assembled for school today? Congratulate yourself on being one totally hip fashionista. Also, come up with a personal mantra that you can say each morning or before you go to bed that will fuel you with the positivity you need to get through each day. Being positive is inspiring – so, go on, inspire yourself!
